GCash offers quick digital tax refunds in 16 countries

Travellers from the Philippines who are purchasing abroad can now obtain eligible tax refunds in a matter of minutes by utilising their GCash wallets. The new Digital Tax Refund feature, which is powered by Alipay+ and its global tax refund partner Global Blue, allows outbound Filipino travellers to receive tax refunds in Philippine Peso (PHP) instantaneously and directly through the GCash app.

GCash users can now seamlessly claim tax refunds directly into their GCash wallets across 16 countries

Initially, the service will be accessible in 16 countries: Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Latvia, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and Switzerland. Additional countries will be added in the near future.

In the past, travellers who claim tax refunds overseas have been required to choose between receiving cash in foreign currency, which may be challenging to use upon their return home, or waiting for the refunds to be credited to their bank accounts or credit cards, which can take anywhere from one to four weeks or longer. The refund’s value may be further diminished by currency conversion fees and exchange rate fluctuations.

The service is intended to be seamlessly integrated into the current airport tax refund process. Travellers may access the Tax Refund feature in the GCash app, approve the one-time Terms and Conditions, and generate a personal QR code after submitting the necessary travel and shopping documents to customs for validation. The refund is immediately converted to Philippine pesos and credited directly to the user’s GCash wallet when the airport tax refund counter representative scans the document. A real-time confirmation notification is also sent.

“Through Digital Tax Refund, we are giving Filipino travellers a faster and more convenient way to receive the money they are entitled to, directly in Philippine pesos through the GCash app they already use every day,” said Carlos Bauza, Vice President for International Payments of GCash International.

The Digital Tax Refund feature is indicative of the ongoing development of digital financial services, which has facilitated the convenience of cross-border transactions for Filipinos. Digital platforms can assist travellers in maximising the value of their purchases, saving time, and enjoying more seamless financial experiences across the 16 countries that are available to them by providing solutions that simplify international travel.
