first megawatt-scale floating solar facility connected – Philippines

The first megawatt-scale floating solar plant in the Philippines has been successfully connected to the grid. Black & Veatch, a world leader in energy and infrastructure, has successfully finished the country’s initial megawatt-scale floating solar power plant at the Malubog Reservoir in Cebu City, in direct response to the Philippines’ energy transition strategy. By providing clean and reliable power to the Carmen Copper mining site, the project—completed with Sungrow FPV’s floating solar system solutions—helps the Philippines reach its national goal of having 35% of its energy come from renewable sources by 2030.Approximately ten percent of the mine’s energy needs are met by the 4.99 MW plant, which produces all of its own power.

Highlights of the floating solar system

  • Sturdy Wind Resistance: The project was designed with a unique anti-wind and wave design based on an ultimate wind speed of 75 m/s, increasing the system’s impact resistance by 50% because it is situated in an area that is prone to strong winds and extreme weather. It significantly outperformed the industry standard of 100,000 cycles in fatigue tests, passing with over a million cycles.  Long-term stability is ensured by an elastic mooring system, which efficiently absorbs and dissipates wave energy.
  • Better Anti-Corrosion Performance: To prevent corrosion, a novel composite coating technique was used. The technology successfully addressed the corrosion concerns of the project by withstanding 4,200 hours of the most rigorous CX-class environmental testing and exhibiting no alterations after more than 18,000 hours of real-world maritime exposure.

This project is an important step in the green transition of the mining industry in the Philippines since floating solar plants offer great generating efficiency and save significant land resources.  The Sungrow FPV service team ensured a smooth project completion by offering end-to-end technical support and prompt response from solution design and installation to grid connection and commissioning.

In order to produce more benchmark projects and quicken the transition to a cleaner, more effective renewable energy future, Sungrow FPV will keep pushing innovation and strengthening partnerships with international partners.
